Book Club May 2013

Hi guy's! *waves*

Last night we had our monthly book club meet. We had chosen The Bunker Diary by Kevin Brooks as our book of the month. Overall we really enjoyed it. We gave it a 4.5 out of five stars. Some of us liked it more than others, and we ALL had an opinion about the ending!! lol

Overall we really liked this book. All but one of us loved it and the one that didn't like still thought it was a good book, they were just let down by the ending.

Ahh the ending!!! *sobs* the end of this book, for me, is what makes it special. A few others were in agreement. We differed in our interpretations of the ending, some choosing to look at it in a positive light and others... not so much! lol (You know who you are!)

Gah! it's so hard to tell you about all the things we spoke about without giving spoilers! suffice to say, you can't really read this book and NOT have an opinion about it. We loved how tense it was and the pace of the book. We found it a really addictive read, and had a few funny stories to tell about trying to walk to/from work while reading it as we just didn't want to put it down.

We felt that it was realistic, and given what's been happening in the news lately, it was certainly relevant to today's world. The coincidence between the plot and real life events is a little unsettling. It has the same shock factor to it, by which I mean it leaves you feeling a little uncomfortable. When you have finished you feel compelled to share the experience with someone. A lot of us had lent our copies to other people when we were done to try to displace some of the feelings the book left us with.

We also talked about next month. Next month is out one year anniversary!! Woop! *glitter cannon* *streamers* *flails* So, we decided to do something a little special. We are not just choosing one book for June, we have chosen a whole series! The Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness to be exact. You don't have to read all three if you can't or don't want to. Most of us have read the first one already, and loved it, some of us have read them all. It's a great series, with lots to talk about, so I'm very much looking forward to next months meet! (I may even make some cake pops to celebrate!)

There was also another thing that I forgot to mention last night. Waterstones, as a company, have a new campaign running at the moment called The Books That Made Us. It is basically all about books that have changed our lived or inspired us in some way. It is a national campaign and will be running in all of the stores. We are hoping to get the public evolved with this as well, to share their stories of books have impacted on their lives. That's where you guys come in. My boss, Tom, would like us to put together a display of the books that made you. You all have to pick one book that has inspired you, changed you or challenged the way that you think and tell us in a few sentences how it did. We will then set up a display somewhere in the shop to put your chosen books and explanations on for everyone to see. How cool is that?! I'm pretty excited by this, I hope you guys are too.  I will explain all of this to you again at the next meet. But if you guys could have a think and pick your books and reasons beforehand that would be great. It also means we can have to display set up sooner rather than later.

Okay, I think that's all for now. If you have any questions pop in or contact me through Twitter, Facebook or email me :D

See you next post,

Kaylie :0)
