Well where to start! I loved this book! It was great not to read anything with romance in it! lol
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against romantic plot lines, but they do seem to be everywhere at the moment!! Katya's World doesn't have one, and doesn't need one either. It's full of tension and mystery and more than a little humour.

Katya's World is set in the future, after earth has colonised other planets in the universe. It is set on a planet called Russulka, which has almost no land on it. The humans must learn to live under the sea. It is a harsh and unforgiving place that has encouraged extreme pragmatism in its people.

I won't go into details about the plot, I'm not a big fan of spoilers, but I will say that there are a lot of twists in this book. Some you will spot coming, but others will catch you out!

It was a delight to be swept away with the characters, in particular Havilland Kane. He was by far my favourite character. I hope he makes an appearance in the next book too. Jonathan has created a wonderfully layered character in Kane. He is smart, funny and hugely dysfunctional! A very cheeky chappy indeed, but with some dark secrets too. :0)

Katya is an interesting character. She comes across as much older then her 15 years, which I think is a result of the world in which she lives, and what she has been through before the start of the book. She is tough, capable and very very smart. She has some brilliant ideas and is amazingly resilient. She's not the easiest person to empathise with though, she has to emotionally detach to survive, and that makes it hard to connect with her sometimes. I am interested in finding out what happens to her next though. The story could go in any direction, and I find that really exciting.

Jonathan has used some beautiful descriptions in this book too. His writing is well paced and takes you on a journey through this world. I was reading this on the bus home last night and I nearly missed my stop! I just didn't want to stop reading! For me that is the sign of a really good book, if it makes me forget that I'm on the bus and transports me to another world then I'm a happy bunny! lol

I have given this 4.5 out of 5 and I would recommend it to everyone! If you're new to Si-Fi then this book would be an excellent introduction to the genre, whether your 15 or 50! lol
